WHOA October was a big month for us at the Mad County Build! We have weather to contend with in Iowa, so there were some crucial pieces that had to be completed!
Well, happy to report that we got even more done than we thought! The first priority was getting the house, garage, and porch prepared for concrete. If there’s not concrete then there is no progress with the inside of the house! Given our timeline that’s a big deal! That included gravel to bring everything to grade, running plumbing, laying insulation boards, and in floor heat!
Next up was the lift we rented to help with the roof trusses and some of the metal. The back of the house and a few other places were too high to reach with regular ladders, plus the lift gives an extra level of safety. With all of the rain we lost some usable time, but Paul and his dad managed to get all of the critical parts complete before the rental period was over. Hallelujah!
The surprise of the month was the septic system install! It was up in the air whether or not we’d get to that until spring, and boy are we thankful it’s over. The inspector was out this week and we passed with “flying colors”. That was a relief, and so nice to have it go smoothly.
Finally CONCRETE IS DONE! It’s a ways from being completely finished, but I can tell it’s going to look amazing. We will need to grout all of the stress cuts and seal it, but with the cold weather who knows if that will happen before we have walls up and such. We were pleased with the company we hired for this part, so if you’re looking for a recommendation please reach out!
I’ve already been getting questions on “what’s next”! Next up is finishing a lot of the exterior stuff before we start an entirely new part of the project. The porch needs to go up, metal on the remainder of the house, all of the exterior doors, etc. I am really looking forward to seeing how the outside looks when it’s finished. I think it’s going to be beautiful!
Thank you for following our journey. Please know you can ask us anything about this process. We love sharing and helping you learn more about building! If you’re trying to see if a project like this is for you, head to our YouTube channel. We add a video every week on a different task and Paul does a great job explaining how to do different parts.
